Apparently aiming to balance commercial appeal and profoundness, this highly accessible and reasonably entertaining comedy-cum-melodrama has surprisingly engaged me, partly because I visited both Beijing and Taipei last year and experienced the cultural shock (yes, even though I am a Chinese) that is similar to, though milder than, what the Taiwanese characters in the movie have experienced in Beijing. The film authors have successfully avoided trivial depictions of such cultural differences by paying more attention on the psyche of the people under both cultures, but the under-developed social/political commentary only shows the filmmakers' compromise to the market.
